Who we are

African Festival UK at present is a voluntary organisation founded in 2003 by Pedro Da Silva Vicente. Our aim is to raise awareness of the history, culture and traditions descending from Africa and the Diaspora it is particularly aimed at young people in the community.

Africa day falls annually on the 25th May and is day that is traditionally used to remember our ancestors in the struggle for freedom and independence in Africa and the Diaspora.

Since 2003 African Festival UK have hosted two large annual events scheduled for the weekends surrounding Africa day.

  • A football tournament made up of local community teams competing for the African Festival UK cup.
  • A day of celebration entitled African Explosion incorporating music, fashion, food, dance and arts and crafts from Africa and the Diaspora.

The initial response from these events has enabled us to become more involved with the youth of Manchester by hosting a range of workshops within local schools and community centres.

Due to us being a voluntary organisation, funding that’s available to us is very limited. However our range of workshops on offer includes: African dance, drumming, DJ skills, mask making, history lessons, storytelling, drama, cooking and much more.

If you are interested in any of the workshops listed, would like to know more about the services that we offer, or would like to offer us sponsorship please get in contact us.
